We think we are made up of body and mind. On closer scrutiny it will be seen that we and the world we are in are made up of consciousness. Let us see how.
Our bodies are made up of cells. Cells are made up of molecules. Molecules are made up of atoms. Indeed, not just our bodies but everything in the world is made up of atoms. Atoms are made up of electrons, protons and neutrons. Protons and neutrons are made up of quarks. Electrons and quarks are made up of energy. Energy is a manifestation or appearance of consciousness (I am saying that because as is said in Advaita and by Ramana Maharshi, Consciousness is the sole reality or ultimate ground of being, and we do know Consciousness exists by our own experience of being conscious. So, if Consciousness is the sole reality, and through scientific reasoning we have arrived at the fact that energy is the final ground of being, then it is a slight leap of faith to conclude that energy has to be an appearance or manifestation of the Consciousness because Consciousness is the only thing that exists and so every other thing has to be a product or manifestation of it. Of course, at this point people can go as crazily skeptical as they want to, but I am not interested in such skeptical doubts that can arise. Those who are skeptical can go looking elsewhere for their answers and discard my thesis here). So, bodies and everything in the world is a manifestation or appearance of consciousness.
Our minds are made up of thoughts. Every thought is made up of words. Words are made up of sounds. Sounds are made up of energy. Energy is a manifestation or appearance of consciousness. So, the mind is a manifestation or appearance of consciousness.
Thus we see that since our bodies and minds and everything else in the world are merely a manifestation or appearance of consciousness, everything in the world, including our bodies and minds, are mere names and forms with their underlying substance or reality being consciousness, much like a wave is mere name and form with its underlying substance or reality being water. A clay pot is clay through and through. There is no such “thing” as a pot except as a name and form. Similarly, body and mind are mere names and forms but not real, because their reality is Consciousness, just like the reality of the pot is clay.
